Sheet Metal Fabrication for Electronics
K-Display provides sheet metal fabrication for electronics: equipment chassis, card cages and subracks, instrument housings, front panels, covers and mounting plates. We build to your drawings, with the material, finish, hardware and shielding provisions your product's electrical design calls for.
How we contribute
An electronic product is a circuit board and a metal box. The box carries the boards, connectors, display and power supply, shields them, lets heat out, and gives the operator a front panel. Its accuracy decides whether the boards drop onto their standoffs, whether the connectors line up with the cutouts, and whether mating panels make electrical contact where the design needs it.
Our sheet metal fabrication for electronics covers the chassis, card cages, housings, panels and covers in that scope. We laser cut and punch the flats, form them, spot weld or hardware-join them, install self-clinching hardware and standoffs, powder coat in-house, apply panel graphics by silk screen or label, and assemble to the state on the drawing. Board design, EMC testing and compliance stay with your engineers.
What we make for electronics
The metal around the board, named the way chassis drawings name it.
- Equipment chassis
- Formed steel and aluminum chassis with board standoffs, power supply mounts, fan cutouts and connector openings placed to your board layout.
- Card cages and subracks
- Card guides, subrack frames, backplane mounting and front rails to the 19-inch series dimensions in your drawings, for plug-in modules and boards.
- Instrument housings
- Bench-top and rack-mount housings with removable top and bottom covers, formed feet and handle mounts for test, measurement and control instruments.
- Front panels and bezels
- Cutout panels for displays, switches, connectors and indicators, with legends silk-screened or labeled in-house.
- Covers and access plates
- Screw-down and hinged covers with captive fasteners, vent patterns and gasket channels for serviceable equipment.
- PCB mounting plates and brackets
- Board carriers, mounting plates, heat-spreader brackets and cable clamps that fix components inside the chassis.
- Shielding partitions
- Internal walls, cans and partition plates that separate circuit sections, formed to the seam and contact detail your EMI design specifies.
What electronics jobs require
Inputs from the board and EMC design that the drawing carries.
- Board-to-chassis fit
- Send the board outline, standoff locations, connector envelopes and cutout positions in one coordinate system so the chassis is cut and formed to the same datums.
- EMI and grounding provisions
- State where the design needs panel-to-panel continuity, gasket channels, aperture size limits and grounding studs. Your EMC engineer sets the requirement, for example for FCC Part 15 or CE testing; we form the seams, apertures and contact areas to it.
- Finish and masked contact areas
- Specify the powder coat color and gloss, the cosmetic faces, and the bare-metal areas at grounding points, threads and mating flanges to mask. A conductive finish such as chem film or plating is not applied by K-Display; specify it on the drawing for your finisher and we ship the parts bare and masked for it.
- Ventilation and thermal openings
- Show the louver, perforation and fan cutout patterns your thermal design requires, and the open area they must provide.
- Material and RoHS restrictions
- Name the alloy and gauge, such as 5052 aluminum or cold-rolled steel, and any RoHS or REACH restrictions on materials and coatings, with the declarations you need.
- Hardware and panel marking
- List self-clinching nuts, studs, standoffs and captive screws by part number, and supply the panel artwork with legend colors and positions.
How the work runs
The chassis is reviewed against the board before the first flat is cut.
Review the board and the box together
We check chassis, cover and panel drawings against the board layout, hardware list and finish specification, and confirm datums and mask areas.
Cut, form and join
Laser cut and punch flats, form them, spot weld or hardware-join, and install standoffs, self-clinching hardware and captive fasteners.
Finish, mark and assemble
Powder coat in-house with contacts masked, apply panel graphics, assemble chassis and covers, and pack for board population or final assembly.
